Growing Up Cleft

What is it like to have a cleft kid? Its exactly like parenting every other kid. You love them so much it hurts. You think they are the best looking person in the universe. They drive you CRAZY, every single day. They grow up way too fast. You're proud of every milestone and every stupid joke they tell. You wouldn't trade it for anything.

I think Eli has had six surgeries now, some smaller and some bigger. The handoff into surgery can be a little hard for parents, but one time when he was two, the anesthesiologist used an RC car to guide him into the OR and he chased right in after it. Every time it breaks my heart to see him come awake, confused and hurting afterwards. But every time, he bounces right back so fast--he is way more interested in Star Wars and superheroes than in doctors, but he will let them poke around.  He constantly asks me random questions like "Does snow have milk in it?" and "What planet does Jesus live on?" Every week we go to the speech therapist and work on some of the sounds that are challenging for him. Sometimes I have no idea what he is saying, but usually I understand him. He is so fun that other kids in his preschool class yell his name like he is a rock star when they see him coming. His sisters are all crazy about him even though he sometimes purposely annoys them. Eli has a great life and we are lucky to have him in our family.
